It’s cheap, easy, it looks good, and, most important, it helps you monitor your boost. For a nice stock look I would recommend Autometer Cobalt boost gauges, I personally think that they look the best, but they can be expensive. For a cheap but still quality gauge I would recommend VDO. In between the cost of those two gauges, there are numerous brands to choose from. Just make sure the gauge you choose allows you to change the light so you’re not stuck with a lime-green light that doesn’t match anything in your car. As long as you can change the bulb, you can use any color LED size light you would like. You will also want a gauge pod for your gauge to sit in. Whether you want the gauge attached to the pillar next to the window or the steering column more of a stock look , I would recommend the company NewSouth for your pod. In this DIY, I’m using the half-steering-column pod, which in my opinion is a little ugly.
How to Install a Boost Gauge and Wires in an MKIV VW or Audi
Before I did my restoration, the Gear Shift switch had been bypassed so the operater did not have to always reach down and put the shifter into “S” before starting. I wired it back the way it is supposed to be, but already am finding it a bit annoying to always have to mess with the tranny just to crank her up, and then have to reach down again and put her back into the gear she was just in. So, I may end up bypassing that switch again, in the pic for those who dont know which one: If you are going to put a standard starter key switch in, are you going to leave the air intake warmer element unhooked?
The key is supposed to send juice to the intake heater when the key is turned to the left.
An analog gauge is a very simple, basic gauge which uses voltage to move a needle across a background indicator to reveal the state of charge. They appear very similar to a typical gas gauge .
West Fleet Direct http: To begin the install loosen the cap on the radiator overfill to remove pressure from the system do this while the engine is cool. Cut the hose closest to the drivers side It does’nt really matter where, I did mine about 6 inches after the fire wall. Then holding the ‘shut off valve’ with the vaccume controller twards the pass side install the portion of the heater hose coming from the cab to the top left nipple on the ‘shut off valve’. Install the portion of the heater hose coming from the engine to the top right nipple and tighten the clamp.
Next cut the heater hose closest to the pass side in the same location as the previous.
Unfortunately I didn’t take photos during the install, these photos were taken afterwards. The install didn’t take long. What took long was deciding where to run my coax and where to mount the antenna. This unit is an all in one and doesn’t require a lot of space, which was my deciding factor. I have used this radio on the trail, as well as on the road and it has done what a CB radio is designed to do: The drawback to this radio is the price.
Feb 17, · the directions are for differnt models the gauge i have is a voltmeter. i knew it snould not be hooked + to + that is how you hook up amp meter. i hooked my volt meter to ing + then to ground and it is working fine thanks for all the info i just wanted to make sure i was not mistaken.
Some late model vehicles use electronic sensors in their pressure and temperature senders for engine control functions. Before removing the original sender, we recommend that you contact your automotive dealer to be sure no critical functions will be disrupted. With pressure gauges it is beneficial to add a T-fitting to install your new gauge and to keep the warning light operational. This allows you to monitor the pressure and still have a warning light to indicate emergency conditions. Disconnect negative – battery cable before installation.
Do not touch ignition wire to the sender S terminal on back of gauge or the sender may be damaged. Mounting Replace light bulb with the same number bulb as the one removed. These gauges can be mounted in-dash or in Auto Meter mounting solutions panels, cups, pods, etc. Fasten with brackets supplied as shown.
This personal website is a collection of information about my truck.
Dave King I was inspired to write this article because of the overwhelming help and support I got from fellow readers of Modularfords. Before I decided on doing this project I was a bit intimidated. I thought about doing this conversion last year but I decided against it because I thought it would be very involved and that a shop would have to do all the work. So I kept sticking clutches in it and wasting money. I approached this article a bit differently than any other article I have done before.
This is the first article that I really took almost a month to write.
how do i hook up my ac request wire? • The AC Request Wire must be hooked up to a volt source when the ac compressor clutch is engaged. WHERE DO I .
But if you insist on using an amp meter, here’s the information. The most important feature of the amp meter is that it is a low resistance high current device. It must be installed in series with an electrical load to limit current flow. If you were to wire the amp meter directly across the battery as you would with a volt meter the amp meter would immediately pass so much current as to fry the meter, almost instantly.
Some amp meters may actually be fused for internal protection. When properly wired in series with an electrical load the amp meter will monitor the current flowing in the circuit. This particular ammeter appears to be manufacture, so not exactly the correct period for MGA. However, since the ammeter was never standard equipment on the MGA, an aftermarket accessory could be almost any design hopfully not ugly.
If you have amp alternator you would need a amp meter. The direct reading vintage analog type dash mounted amp meter requires hookup wires sufficiently large to carry the full current in the circuit being monitored. A 30 amp meter would need a pair of 10 gauge wires.
Jun 1, If you want to know how much your meter will draw on the battery when the truck is off, look on the spec sheet that came with your meter for a thing called input impedance. I just looked it up for the voltage ranges of a Fluke multi meter, and it is 10Mohms for that. OK, so it is not infinite, but some meters use an op-amp on the input and do have an “infinite” input impedance.
Wire a fuel gauge by first disconnecting the old dysfunctional unit to replace it with a new one. Obtain volt power from the fuse box using a standard wire, and connect it to the positive terminal of the fuel gauge.
Mike Ervin Update by: All of these gauges are in-dash units so I had to figure out how I was going to mount them. I have seen setups with all of them mounted on the face of the bezel, and also using the billet aluminum replacement bezel that you can buy from LMC. I just didn’t like the way it looked after you get them in.
The gauges are tilted forward on the same plain as the bezel which makes it hard to see them. After a lot of thought I went ahead and ordered the gauges still not fully having made up my mind on what I was going to do.

Engine Instrument Wiring Made Easy Engine instrument gauges fall into three categories, and there are differences in the terminals and wiring. By Ed Sherman June 6, The vast majority of recreational boats in service today are still using analogue instrumentation systems. More modern digital, NMEA-networked, and multifunction gauges may be all the buzz, but the reality is that most boats are still equipped with the same analogue set-ups that have been in use for decades.
The insides of instrument panels can get a little crowded, but untangling it is all a matter of circuits, senders, and wire colors.

In many factory-original wiring systems, the entire electrical system will draw power from the main junction, and the battery will charge from the main junction too. If we have a 2. Of course we have to charge the battery, but what about routing power from the alternator to the electrical system? And so the result of this ONE-WIRE method would be dimmer lights and overall weak electrical system performance; in fact often worse performance than with the original, correctly wired, small alternator that was standard equipment on the old cars.
Okay, all these modern accessories that come with instructions to connect a wire directly to the battery POS, and the instruction to connect a cable from the ONE-WIRE directly to the battery, has resulted with a clutter at the battery area.

How to Install an Electrical Oil Pressure Gauge by Amelia Allonsy Electric oil pressure gauges are easy for a DIY-mechanic to install, whether replacing a faulty oil pressure gauge, or a custom, after-market look is desired. Oil pressure gauges are designed to inform the driver when the oil falls below a safe operating level, or when the oil pressure is too high.
Driving a vehicle without an oil pressure gauge can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Most oil pressure gauges come with mounting panels and the necessary installation hardware. The necessary hardware can be purchased from an auto parts dealer, if not included with the oil pressure gauge. Choose a suitable location to mount the oil pressure gauge; mount the gauge so it is easily viewed while driving.
Common mounting locations for aftermarket oil pressure gauges include under the dash, on top of the dash, or set into the dashboard. Mount the gauge panel to the dash with a screwdriver and screws provided in the kit; set the gauge aside. This makes it easier to connect the wires. Remove the oil drain plug from the oil pan with a wrench and drain the old oil into a oil catch pan. This is an opportune time to change the oil filter as well. Remove the old oil pressure sending unit with a ratchet and socket; the oil pressure sending unit is shaped like a cylinder and is usually located near the oil filter.
Refer to the new oil pressure sending unit in the oil pressure gauge kit to help you identify the part.
Loud Clunk: when the 4WD disengages
The FI version has a blind hole near intake 3 for the temp sensor II. If you use this head as part of your engine project you don’t have to worry about the hole because it’s blind. If you have the head from the 74 bus, then you’ll notice two holes on either side of the intakes. These are not breather openings to vent pressure from behind the valve cover.
Apr 21, · Just hook the gauge up to “output” or “truck” side of the big red switch. Whichever battery is switched on – that’s the voltage you read. When it’s in the ALL position, you read the voltage of both batteries combined.
If your car has pillar air bags, then pillar mounted gauge is a no-no. Look under hood at the oil filter. Base of that housing, on passenger side, you’ll see something screwed in with single wire sticking out. That is the oil pressure switch. Running the wires is very easy with a TDI of these years, because there is a plugged knockout hole in the firewall that would otherwise take the cable from the accelerator pedal. TDIs are drive by wire and the wire is routed elsewhere.
